The Portuguese number one in 74 kg division Rui Botelho is one of the most decorated Muaythai athletes of the modern Portuguese history. Rui made his name famous winning the gold medal at the European Championships 2017 in Paris leaving behind athletes from leading Muaythai countries; Ukraine, Turkey, Russia.
Being current European champion Rui is getting ready to challenge Kokkrachai Chotichanin in Mexico after his bronze medal at the last World Championships in Minsk. Kokkrachai eventually won gold which Rui will have all chances to claim for Portugal.
Rui started practising Muaythai after his father “forced him” into doing sports, and Rui fell in love with Muaythai from the first sight. For Rui it was more than martial arts, it was developing confidence, discipline and all the elements Muaythai is so famous for.
Rui said that Portugal has very many talented athletes and his successful performance will be an example for the youth to believe in themselves. The award given to him only confirms how important Muaythai is in Portugal.
2018 will be another year full of challenges and Rui looks boldly in the future as he will have to compete for his country, people who believe in him and most important for himself to excel in sport.
