The World Championships 2019 has been one of the most successful for the Turkish team which won two gold, two silver and five bronze medals in Bangkok. It was truly exciting to see how years of training and dedciation, participation in each IFMA tournament with full team give its fruits in form of medals and triumphs for many athletes.
Another highlight of the Turkish success is the fact that medals have spread across genders with one gold won by Bugra Tugay Erdogan and one by Bediha Tacyildiz. It was a triumphan year for Bediha after she enjoyed bronze last year. Today she is the world champion in 67 kg.
Sercan Koc was very close to the Athlete of the Year getting to the final through a very hard draw. His new weight division of 60 kg proved truly lucky for him but it luck is the least you need when you step in the ring against world best athletes. Serkan reached the final against all odds winning representatives of the strongest championships. Ishan Galiev (KAZ) was the first test which Serkan confidently passed, with Slovakia gaining momentum it was not an easy bout against Tomas Tadlanek as Serkan moved to quarterfinal against the multiple world champion from Ukraine Konstantin Tryshin. The Turkish support group thundered down the pee muay in all three rings after Serkan was announced the winner against Konstantin. In the semifinal Serkan was full of confidence and even though he took on a very experienced Nhat Nguyen Tran Duy from Vietnam there was nothing to stop him on his way to final.
Rabia Akdeniz, Erdem Dincer, Funda Alkayis, Gulistan Turan, Zubeyr Barin, Mensure Karadayi made the Turkish team be the top ranked country of the World Championships and they can be the best example for their youth at the upcoming Youth World Championships.
